Tom Kloza, former OPIS chief analyst, is taking on a new role with Wellesley, Massachusetts-based Gulf Oil, owned by RaceTrac, as senior energy and market advisor, according to a LinkedIn post

“I’m delighted to announce that I will be providing exclusive market analysis and advisory services to Gulf,” Kloza said in his LinkedIn post. “With operations now spanning coast to coast, Gulf is poised for expansive growth as a national supplier.”

Kloza will supply market commentary for RaceTrac-owned Gulf Oil customers and counterparties, which he says will remain “objective” and “unfettered,” and will help marketers navigate an increasingly volatile North American fuels landscape. He also plans to remain active across industry groups, media outlets and speaking engagements, continuing the role he has played for petroleum marketers for decades.

In his new role, Kloza said he is “privileged” to work more closely with a company he has covered and admired for decades.

“I promise to render the same refreshing and honest views that I’ve brought to petroleum marketers for the last 50 years,” he said.

In April, Kloza was terminated from Gaithersburg, Maryland-based Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), the Dow Jones-owned company he co-founded and was with for 45 years. At the time, he told CSP that he was “blindsided,” but could not comment on the circumstances of his departure. OPIS declined to comment.

Kloza spent nearly half a century analyzing the downstream fuel industry, writing columns for related publications, including CSP, and appearing on broadcast media and podcasts. He also previously served on the board for the Fuels Institute, which has been rebranded to the Transportation Energy Institute.

Before joining Gulf Oil, Kloza worked with the refinery and renewables specialists at Turner, Mason & Co. earlier this summer, an experience he said will provide additional insight into offshore and North American refining trends.

In 2023, RaceTrac, Atlanta, purchased the Gulf Oil brand through its wholly owned wholesale fuel supply and trading subsidiary, Metroplex Energy. As part of the transaction, RaceTrac acquired Gulf's nationally recognized fuel brand across the United States and U.S. territories, all of Gulf's branded distributor and license agreements and the exclusive rights to market fuel at Gulf's retail locations along the Massachusetts Turnpike.
