PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill. — Thorntons LLC opened a new convenience store in Prospect Heights, Ill., on Oct. 10. It is the company’s 75th store in Illinois and the company's fifth new store to open since being acquired by BP and ArcLight.
“We’re really proud to open this fantastic new store here in Prospect Heights and celebrate it with all of our friends and new neighbors,” said Simon Richards, president and CEO of Thorntons, at the Oct. 11 ribbon-cutting ceremony. “This is a really important time for our company. Thorntons has been growing, and growing fast. This is the fifth new store we’ve opened so far this year, with a few more to go yet. [It's] the second one this month in Illinois.”
Thorntons opens its next store in Romeoville, Ill., on Oct. 25, with additional stores planned for Posen and Monee, Ill.
Louisville, Ky.-based Thorntons operates more than 200 c-stores in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and Florida. It is No. 38 in CSP’s2019 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by size. In December 2018, London-based BP and Boston-based ArcLight announced the formation of a joint venture to purchase Thorntons, with BP participating as the minority partner.

Thorntons’ new Prospect Heights site has a 4,400-square-foot convenience store on 1.48 acres.
The facility has 24 auto fueling positions and LED lighting for customer safety and energy efficiency.
Joining Richards, other Thorntons executives and store management were Nicholas Helmer, mayor of Prospect Heights; Alderwoman Wendy Morgan-Adams; representatives from the local police department; and a representative from the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Thorntons donated $2,500 to the food bank.
Thorntons features fresh food prepared daily, including burritos, sandwiches and doughnuts.
The store offers fountain beverages and frozen beverages made with 100% filtered water.
The store offers coffee and tea, with a creamer dispenser nearby to help shoppers customize their beverages.
