ALBANY, N.Y. -- Case Marshall and the late Carl Tripi have been elected to the New York Convenience Store Hall of Fame. In recognition of their achievement in and exceptional service to New York state's convenience store industry, the New York Association of Convenience Stores (NYACS) will induct them as the 19th and 20th members of the Hall of Fame on May 12, 2005, during the Chairmen's Banquet, the closing event of NYACS' annual trade show and convention in Syracuse, N.Y.
Case Marshall is vice president of Pit Stop Convenience Stores, Weedsport, N.[image-nocss] Y. In 2000, at age 30, he became the youngest retailer elected to chair the association's board. He served as treasurer before and after his two-year tenure as chairman.
On Case's first birthday in 1972, his parents, Ted and Nancy Marshall, started a businessthe Marshall Manor motel in Weedsport.By age 6, Case was sweeping sidewalks, and he has been involved in the family business ever since. Their first store opened in 1984, with Case running the cash register after school and on weekends. After attending SUNY Plattsburgh, he returned to manage the chain, which by then had grown to 12 stores.
Today, the family operates 16 Sunoco and CITGO-branded Pit Stops in Cayuga, Wayne, Tompkins, Cortland, Oswego and Ontario counties along with a home heating oil and propane distribution company.
Carl Tripi was chairman of Tripifoods Inc., Buffalo, N.Y., which is the country's 20th largest convenience wholesaler.
After graduating from Georgetown University in 1955 and serving with the U.S. Air Force as an F-86 fighter pilot, Carl entered the family grocery business his grandfather had founded in 1911. Over the next 40 years, he built Tripifoods into a full-line c-store supplier that now distributes to nearly 4,000 customers in 18 states. Today, Carl's two sons continue the businessGregory as president and CEO, and Joseph as senior vice president.
Carl, who died in 1999, was known for a gruff exterior that masked a gentle heart. He is remembered for dedication to family, generosity toward employees and customers, and unwavering commitment to quality and distinction.
Indicative of his support of NYACS, Carl started the Chairman's Banquet when he offered to underwrite the cost of a dinner to be held in conjunction with NYACS' first trade show. Nearly 20 years later, Tripifoods remains the sponsor of this annual banquet.
