Rebranding of Kum & Go convenience stores by Maverik is starting in Iowa and Nebraska, according to a rebrand page on Maverik’s website.
Salt Lake City-based Maverik in August 2023 completed its acquisition of Kum & Go from the Krause Group, adding about 400 locations to its portfolio and doubling the number of stores it owns.
The start of the Iowa rebrands is notable because Kum & Go originated in Iowa in 1963, four years after founders Bill Krause and his father in-law Tony Gentle entered the retail world. Kum & Go’s headquarters was in West Des Moines.
- Maverik is No. 12 on CSP’s 2025 Top 202 ranking of U.S. c-store chains by store count.
There are 34 Iowa locations listed on a rebranding page on Maverik’s website. The first closing date is Friday at a location in Neola. It will reopen as a Maverik on Tuesday. Locations, all of which have a four-day rebrand turnaround, include Adair, Walnut, Stuart, Waukee, West Des Moines, Johnston, Clive, Des Moines, Windsor Heights, Pleasant Hill, Ankeny and elsewhere.
The last location on the list, In Des Moines, closes Oct. 10 and reopens Oct. 14 as a Maverik.
Kum & Go’s website says it has 96 Iowa locations.
Rebrands have started in Nebraska, according to Maverik’s website. Four Kum & Go locations closed in mid-June, starting June 13, and each opened four days later as Maveriks. Four more locations closed starting July 11, and the last of these four reopens Friday. Seven of these eight locations are in Omaha, and the eighth is in Papillion.
There are 17 Kum & Go locations in Nebraska, according to Kum & Go’s website.
In November, a spokesperson said Maverik was in the process of rebranding all Kum & Go convenience stores, with the intent to unify its entire combined footprint under the Maverik brand.
CSP has reached out to Maverik for details on the remaining Iowa and Nebraska Kum & Go locations.
The Maverik brand targets adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts by establishing itself as a "base camp" to fuel up for activities such as off-roading, biking, canoeing and mountain climbing while reflecting the natural beauty of the local communities' favorite outdoor adventures in the stores' design and incorporating them into the stores' concept and decor.
