Murphy USA Inc., which operates the Murphy USA, Murphy Express and QuickChek convenience-store chains, has laid off approximately 100 corporate employees, CSP has learned.
“Murphy USA Inc. recently reorganized as part of a broader effort to strengthen operational effectiveness and position the company for long-term success. Unfortunately, this change included making the difficult decision to reduce the size of our workforce by close to 100, mostly corporate employees, across Murphy USA and QuickChek offices,” Alejandra Barron, vice president and head of marketing for Murphy USA, said in a statement provided to CSP Friday morning. “This reorganization was not focused on specific departments and decisions were not made lightly. The reduction was based on thoughtful analysis that ensures we have an agile and efficient organization optimized to support the business now and in the future.”
She added, “We are grateful for the contributions of every employee impacted and are committed to treating them with respect and providing resources to support them through this transition. We remain focused on our mission and confident in the path ahead.”
- Murphy USA is No. 4 on CSP’s 2025 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.
In Murphy’s second-quarter 2025 earnings call in July, President and CEO Andrew Clyde said when it came to non-fuel performance on existing stores, Murphy USA was about $20 million behind their expectations for 2028, which included $1.3 billion in projected EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization). This was a goal Murphy USA has included in its investor presentations since 2023, he said.
The largest driver of this, he said, was at QuickChek, where older, non-fuel stores have been impacted the most from the QSR value wars and food and beverage margins have been hampered by cost inflation and overall weakness in the Northeast traffic.
Murphy has also been growing its store count. It said in its last earnings report that it had a total of 1,766 c-stores—1,612 Murphy USA/Express stores and 154 QuickChek stores—as of June 30.
In the second quarter of this year, it opened five new-to-industry and nine raze-and-rebuild Murphy USA/Express stores, and it opened one NTI QuickChek store. Thirty-nine stores, including new builds and rebuilds, were under construction at the end of the second quarter.
Clyde said in July that Murphy USA was poised to open 50 new stores over the next year, “which will help drive EBITA growth into 2026 and beyond.”
El Dorado, Arkansas-based Murphy USA operates one of the nation’s largest convenience-store chains, operating more than 1,760 locations in 27 states, located primarily in the Southwest, Southeast, Midwest and Northeast. It acquired Whitehouse Station, New Jersey-based QuickChek in January 2021.
