Murphy USA reached a total of 1,712 convenience stores in 2022, up from 1,679 in 2021, the El Dorado, Arkansas-based company said in its recently released annual report. And it plans to build 45 new stores in 2023 and replace up to 30 kiosks with small, walk-in stores.

“Building new stores in attractive markets remains Murphy USA’s top priority for growth,” Murphy USA said in the report.

The 45 new stores will include up to five QuickCheks, the Whitehouse Station, New Jersey-based brand Murphy USA acquired in January 2021.

In addition, the company is set to complete up to 30 raze-and-rebuilds in 2023. The program replaces high-performing kiosks near Walmart Supercenters with 1,400-square-foot walk-in stores with a broader merchandise assortment.

Murphy USA has converted 177 kiosks since 2013, and the network has evolved from nearly 70% kiosks to less than 40% in 2022, the company said.

In 2022, Murphy added 36 new-to-industry stores, including 34 2,800-square-food Murphy-branded stors and two new 5,400-square-food QuickChek stores. Three older QuickChek stores without fuel closed in 2022, the company said.

Murphy USA’s store brand breakdown for 2022:

  • 157 QuickChek
  • 404 Murphy Express
  • 1,151 Murphy USA
  • Total: 1,712

Murphy USA operates one of the nation’s largest convenience-store chains, with more than 1,700 stores in 27 states, located primarily in the Southwest, Southeast, Midwest and Northeast, the majority of which are next to Walmart Supercenters.
