NEW YORK – Walmart again topped the Fortune 500 list for 2015. And led by Exxon Mobil Corp. at No. 2, oil companies as usual helped populate the top 10 and placed throughout the annual list, the magazine’s 61st.
Companies directly owning convenience stores and gas stations begin to make their way onto the list with Chevron, which owns the ExtraMile c-stores, at No. 3; grocer Kroger, which also owns nearly 800 c-stores, at No. 20; Marathon Petroleum, which owns the Speedway chain, at No. 25; and Energy Transfer Equity, the owner of master limited partnership (MLP) Energy Transfer Partners, which owns Sunoco Inc., part of Sunoco LP and the former Susser, at No. 53.
Meanwhile, c-store retailer The Pantry, Cary, N.C., which took the No. 402 slot for 2015, has been acquired by Canadian retail giant Alimentation Couche-Tard.
Landing in the second 500 for 2015 are Northern Tier Energy at No. 502, United Refining at No. 716 and Par Petroleum at No. 734.
Big-box, supermarket (most which have dabbled in retail gasoline), drug, dollar-store and quick-service restaurant (QSR) chains proliferate, while pure-play convenience-store, gas-station and travel-center chains did manage to maintained their foothold on the list.
In total, the Fortune 500 companies account for $12.5 trillion in revenues, $945 billion in profits, $17 trillion in market value and employ 26.8 million people worldwide.
