'Pretty Phenomenal, Pretty Quick'

QuikTrip's ambitious growth plans stretch from North Carolina to Arizona

TULSA, Okla. -- On top of previously reported expansion plans in North Carolina and South Carolina, QuikTrip recently outlined plans for growth throughout several of its other markets, from Dallas and De Moines, Iowa, to Tucson, Ariz., and Tulsa, Okla.

"We will be expanding into what's called the upstate South Carolina area, and also the Charlotte North Carolina metropolitan area,” spokesperson Mike Thornbrugh told KRMG.com. On top of that, QT is looking to either expand or rebuild older stores in Tulsa, Dallas, Des Moines, Omaha, Atlanta, Tucson and other markets.

Even better news comes, writes KRMG, when you add up the new jobs that will be created. "If we do what we think we should do, the growth will be pretty phenomenal, pretty quick," Thornbrugh said. "Based upon what we're currently doing, within hopefully a year [we could add] maybe 300 to 400 jobs."

In its home market of Tulsa, Thornbrugh specified, “instead of new store counts, we're going back into some of the old store formats where we can and either relocating them or building the new Generation 3 [store design] on the existing area."

In the current economy, some would say it's risky to expand, but Thornbrugh said QT does exhaustive research and makes informed decisions. "We're very cautious, and we like to think we manage risk really well," he told the website. "With the economy what it is, with land cost and material cost, it does give QuikTrip the advantage to build quicker than we normally would.”

Established Tulsa, Okla., in 1958, QuikTrip now owns and operates more than 570 stores in 11 states.
