Rutter’s Vice President of Operations Jere Matthews has retired after a 47-year career with the York, Pennsylvania-based convenience-store company. His last day was Dec. 26.

Matthews began his career with Rutter’s in 1977 as a part-time team member, steadily rising through the organization. Over nearly five decades, he played a key role in store operations and team development as Rutter’s expanded its retail footprint.

  • Rutter’s is No. 79 on CSP’s 2025 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.

Additionally, Rutter’s promoted Desiree Dennis to senior director of operations. She was previously director of training for operations and will now oversee the entire operations team. In addition, Allen King has been promoted to director of training.

Jere was a great leader of our operations team over many years,” said Scott Hartman, president and CEO of Rutter’s. “He never sought individual recognition, but he could always be counted on for his hard work and dedication, which endeared him to everyone at Rutter’s. We wish him well on his future endeavors, including travel and time with his family!”

Known for his operational expertise, approachable leadership style and commitment to excellence, Matthews has had a lasting influence on both the company’s culture and its success, Rutter's said.

"Looking back on the nearly 48 years I have spent with Rutter’s, I feel incredibly grateful for the support, collaboration and relationships I have experienced over that time," said Matthews. "I am very proud and honored to have worked for a company that continues to 'raise the bar' and differentiate itself in the convenience industry. Over my career, we faced challenges together, celebrated successes and worked hard as a team to make Rutter’s a leader, not only in the industry, but in the world! I’ll always look back fondly on my time at Rutter’s as I move onto my next chapter.

York, Pennsylvania-based Rutter’s operates 92 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.
