Sheetz is the only c-store chain on the new list of America’s Most Innovative Companies from Fortune and Statista, released Thursday. The convenience-store chain was selected based on the list’s ranking that is built on three pillars: product innovation, process innovation and innovation culture.
Sheetz, Altoona, Pennsylvania, joins 300 U.S. companies on the list that are transforming industries both inside and out.
With its pioneering spirit, the company said in 2019, it opened office space in Pittsburgh to exclusively focus on new lines of business, next-generation customer experience and envisioning what convenience will look like more than 10 years from now.
Fast forward to 2023 and the company said it doubled the size of this office space, “significantly expanding its footprint to support rapid growth and new initiatives within the company.”
The c-store chain said it was also ahead of the curve in the convenience industry in supporting electric vehicles. The company said it surpassed “two million electric vehicle charging sessions in 2023—a milestone that underscores Sheetz’s commitment to innovation at every level.”
For the evaluation of the innovation culture and the internal view of process innovation, Statista deployed online surveys where employees could score their own company on a scale system. For the evaluation of the external view of process innovation as well as product innovation, Statista surveyed experts in various fields—from recruiters to management consultants and patent attorneys.
Sheetz recently made Fortune magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the 10th straight year. The c-store chain was ranked 40 on the list and is the only c-store chain that made the cut.
Sheetz is No. 13 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.
