Wawa is expanding further into the western part of Virginia—with plans to open 60 stores there over the next 10 years.

On the heels of two groundbreaking events in Staunton and Lynchburg, Virginia, the convenience-store retailer announced its expansion plans for the next decade, including opening six to eight new c-stores in 2025.

Wawa officials said they were excited to enter the I-81 region, which is a key north-south freight route in the state of Virginia off of Interstate 81.

“Wawa has been part of the Virginia community for more than 25 years and is proud to be expanding further west to the I-81 region,” said Kim Dowgielewicz, director for store operations for Wawa. “We are thrilled to continue growing in new markets to provide the community with our one-of-a-kind offer and commitment to supporting the community.”

Wawa said it is continuing to work on finding and finalizing details for sites under contract. To build each store, Wawa will invest approximately $7.5 million and employ, on average, 140 contractors and local partners. Once open, each store will employ an average of 35 associates, with Wawa expecting to create “thousands of long-term new jobs,” the company said.

Virginia isn’t the only state the Pennsylvania-based retailer is expanding its footprint in. Over the next five to eight years, Wawa plans to build and open more than 26 stores in Georgia, at the pace of around three to four stores per year.
