WAWA, Pa. — Wawa Inc. plans to further expand its footprint in central Pennsylvania stretching further west along the Susquehanna River, the company said. The convenience-store retailer has been in Berks and Lancaster counties with 17 stores for more than two decades. Plans are for Wawa to double its store count over the next three to five years with its first new store in the central part of the Keystone State in 2024, with the potential for up to 40 additional stores.

“With a commitment to fulfilling lives, we’re thrilled to continue our growth and expansion in our existing markets to provide quality fresh food, beverages and support to the community,” said John Poplawski, vice president of real estate for Wawa. “In addition, Wawa’s continued expansion will mean even more convenience and new jobs in the central Pennsylvania community.”

Wawa is actively seeking central Pennsylvania site suggestions.

With headquarters in Wawa, Pa., Wawa has approximately 630 convenience stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C.

The company continues to open stores throughout its current markets, it said, and it is set to open 54 new stores in 2022. Additionally, Wawa has plans to enter new, adjacent markets in the next few years.

Earlier this month, Wawa said it plans to expand its footprint into the Nashville, Tenn., market, the company has revealed. The chain will open its first Nashville store in 2025, it said, with the potential for up to 40 stores in the market.

In April, Wawa announced plans to expand its footprint into the Florida Panhandle and adjacent markets in southern Alabama over the next few years, the beginning of a new period of aggressive expansion with a goal of essentially doubling the chain’s store count.
