ASBPE honors CSP for cover, research, more, Restaurant Business for magazine of year

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- The editors of Winsight (formerly CSP Business Media) struck gold and silver multiple times—and won the highest honor possible—at the national and regional awards ceremonies for the ASBPE (“Azbee”) awards this month.

For the first time, CSP took home awards in three categories on both the national and regional level, and the editors of Restaurant Business magazine won magazine of the year.

In the category of feature article, general interest, ASBPE honored CSP senior editor/special projects coordinator Samantha Oller and freelance writer Jeremy Seth Davis with gold national and regional awards for their October 2014 cover story, “Wage Rage,” an in-depth examination of the challenges and opportunities retailers face in the ongoing debate about local and federal minimum wages.

In the category of front cover photo, the group awarded creative director Bruce Ramsay and lead designer Nico Heins with gold national and regional awards for CSP’s November 2014 cover image, a striking photo of Speedway’s Tony Kenney. This is the first time CSP has been awarded in this category.

ASBPE again honored Oller—this year with a silver national and gold regional award—for her analysis of CSP’s proprietary research study, the Outlook Survey. Last year she won a silver regional award for the 2013 survey, and she won a bronze national award for her story on the 2012 survey.

In another first, CSPnet.com received a silver regional award for The Convenience Top 101 microsite--led by news director Steve Holtz--which for the past two years has provided a comprehensive list and analysis of the leading 101 convenience-store chains in the industry.

Senior editor/content development coordinator Angel Abcede won a gold regional award for his December 2014 profile of Sam L. Susser, CSP’s Retail Leader of the Year. Angel last year took home a silver regional award in the individual-profile category for his story on late Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes president John MacDougall, CSP’s 2013 Retail Leader of the Year. In 2013, he won a regional gold award for his 2012 profile of CSP’s previous Retail Leader of the Year, Kwik Trip’s Don Zietlow.

ASBPE again recognized Oller, along with director of editorial production Jennifer Bulat and lead designer Nico Heins, with a silver regional award in the category of special supplement for the 2014 Category Management Handbook (CMH). This in-depth special issue of CSP, which is nominated for a regional award, has been recognized multiple times over the past 11 years for excellence in information graphics.

“What an amazing year for our industry and for CSP,” said vice president and group editor Mitch Morrison. “Our national and regional Azbee awards speak to an industry that is vibrant and rapidly transforming, one that requires us to surprise and delight our customers. It also speaks to our editorial and design team to constantly seek creative and entertaining ways to communicate fresh insights and business solutions to help retailers grow their businesses.”

The ASBPE Midwest regional awards were held in the Chicago area July 17, and the national awards were presented in July 24 in New York. ASBPE is based in Wheaton, Ill.
