Chester’s Chicken is rolling out a new limited-time offer in the form of its 5 Buk Box.

From now through mid-May, customers can choose from three $5 meals. The 5 Buk Box includes a choice of:

  • Leg, thigh and biscuit
  • Leg, wing and biscuit
  • Five Chicken Bites and biscuit

“Our new 5 Buk Box satisfies cravings for the juiciest, crispiest chicken on the go without compromising on taste or affordability,” said William Culpepper, vice president of marketing for Birmingham, Alabama-based Chester's Chicken. "It's a win for guests demanding value and our operators who pride themselves on delivering exceptional experiences."

To combat the rise in quick-service restaurant (QSR) meal deals, convenience stores have answered with a flurry of their own in the last several months. During a webinar in the fall, Donna Hood Crecca, principal at CSP sister research arm Technomic, Chicago, said it has become increasingly tough for convenience stores to compete with and steal share from QSRs “because of all the value offerings that are out there.”

But c-stores keep battling. Westborough, Massachusetts-based EG America, for example, on Jan. 8 started selling a $3 Meal Deal featuring a sausage, egg and melted cheese breakfast sandwich on a croissant along with any size coffee, hot or iced. Customers can add a hashbrown for $1.

EG America also recently offered two doughnuts and a large hot or iced coffee for $4 for a limited time.

QuickChek, Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, recently extended its most popular 6-inch made-to-order subs at the reduced price of $3.99, including its meatball recipe—and customers who order a 6-inch made-to-order sub for $3.99 can add a pack of M&M’s candies or a two-pack of QuickChek’s freshly baked cookies for 99 cents.

Laval, Quebec-based Circle K in the fall took a tiered approach with $3, $4 and $5 offerings. The $3 meal was a roller grill hot dog or Taquito, choice of 1-2-ounce Frito-Lay chips and up to 44-ounce Polar Pop.

Chester's Chicken, a quick-service restaurant concept, has 1,300 locations and has been in business for more than 50 years. Chester’s offers fried chicken in convenience stores, truck stops and supermarkets.

RaceTrac enters uncharted territory with its Potbelly acquisition

The Bottom Line: There has never been a purchase of a restaurant chain the size of the sandwich brand Potbelly by a convenience-store chain. History suggests it could be a difficult road.
