Wawa store No. 8659 on Proffit Road in Charlottesville, Virginia, is the best gas station hoagie in the country, according to Sixt.

The Germany-based mobility service provider that offers car rentals and car sharing in October launched its search for a “Hoagie Hunter” to eat dozens of hot turkey hoagies and determine which location serves the best.

“With America’s well-known love for on-the-go hoagies, Sixt sent out their own Hoagie Hunter, an expert in all things sandwiches, to taste hoagies at Wawa, Weigel’s and QuikTrip gas stations in the U.S. to determine which gas station makes the best hoagie,” the company said. “Landon, the Hoagie Hunter, searched high and low to determine which gas station had the best hoagie, taking quality, price and customer service into consideration in his rankings to see which station came out on top.”

  • Wawa is No. 10 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by total number of company-owned stores. QuikTrip is No. 9 and Weigel's is No. 79.

Along with help from its Hoagie Hunter, Sixt weighted Google reviews for Wawa, Pennsylvania-based Wawa, Powell, Tennessee-based Weigel’s and Tulsa, Oklahoma-based QuikTrip locations to see which has the best hoagie. Ranking factors included the average Google review rating, the number of Google reviews, the number of sandwiches on each menu and the average cost of a sandwich at each location. The Wawa store at 3267 Proffit Road in Charlottesville came out on top.

The next best locations:

  • Second place: Wawa store No. 6304 on Tallahassee Highway in Bainbridge, Georgia
  • Third place: Weigel’s store No. 93 on West Stone Drive in Kingsport, Tennessee

Rounding out the top 10:

  • QuikTrip store No. 4067 in San Antonio, Texas
  • Wawa store No. 5801 in Fairhope, Alabama
  • Wawa store No. 5325 in Gainesville, Florida
  • Wawa store No. 5438 in Charlottesville, Virginia
  • Weigel’s store No. 90 in Sevierville, Tennessee
  • Wawa store No. 5323 in Gainesville, Florida
  • Wawa store No. 5384 in Gainesville, Florida

"We created the Hoagie Hunter position to uncover which U.S. gas station has the best hoagies,” said Joseph Gerbino, director of communications at Sixt. “Hiring a Hoagie Hunter to visit these gas stations and sample the hoagies for himself allowed our team to get a firsthand account of just how delicious these hoagies really are. At Sixt, we love celebrating unforgettable road trip experiences, and the Hoagie Hunter quest was the ultimate foodie road trip. Finding the best hoagie is all part of the adventure."

Landon was chosen based on his application excerpt, a Sixt spokesperson told CSP

“We asked each applicant to submit an excerpt on why they believe they would be perfect for the job, and Landon stood apart from the rest,” the spokesperson said.

The Hoagie Hunter job paid $2,500 and one $500 convenience-store gift card. Landon visited various convenience stores across the country, assessing and recording:

  • Average time to prepare a hoagie
  • Quality of filling
  • Bread quality
  • Customer service
  • Overall deliciousness of sandwich

Additional factors he assessed:

  • Atmosphere
  • Value for money
  • Overall amenities
  • Menu size
  • Average wait time

All travel expenses and sandwich costs were covered as Landon visited 100 locations.
