A C-Store Twist on ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’

Chiovera and family make a run at $20,000 prize on “Family Style”

LOS ANGELES -- The season premiere of Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” will have an intriguing convenience-store take to it. One of the competing families in the four-episode “Family Style” arc will include former 7-Eleven and Circle K foodservice executive Joe Chiovera.

“In this family-style showdown, four teams made up of three family members will compete in each episode for a chance to win the grand prize,” states the show summary on the Food Network website. “Each family team will have to navigate through the aisles of the grocery store, battling different supermarket-themed obstacles, from cooking on a budget to cooking with five ingredients or less. … The last family standing will go onto the shopping spree of a lifetime worth up to $20,000.”

Chiovera’s participation was first reported by NACS, and Chiovera, now an industry consultant, confirmed he is taking part but contractually could not discuss the competition.

About the debut episode titled “Family Style: Kids Rule!” Food Network wrote: Four competing families start by joining the breakfast club, but this is Watch Your Weight,” so they can cook with only a certain amount of ingredients. Next, the families must make a hot lunch ABC style, using only ingredients whose name begins with a certain letter. The final two families go head-to-head in the dreaded game of Food Wheel.

The premier episode will air at 8/7c on Sunday, Jan. 4, on Food Network.

Chiovera has been a vocal proponent of the culinary talents within the c-store industry, and he’s no exception: He received his bachelor’s degree from Johnson & Wales, a culinary arts university, and worked for Marriott for eight years before joining the convenience industry.
