MONTEREY, Calif. — Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. has announced a second voluntary recall of salad kits due to a possible Lysteria monocytogenes contamination.

The Monterey, Calif.-based company’s recall includes branded and private-label products containing iceberg lettuce processed at its Springfield, Ohio, and Soledad, Calif., facilities. The company issued the voluntary recall after it tested equipment it used to harvest raw iceberg lettuce and found that it contained Listeria monocytogenes.

The products recalled from the Springfield, Ohio, facility can be identified by a product lot code in the upper right-hand corner beginning with the letter W and with a “best if used by” date between Dec. 22, 2021, and Jan. 9, 2022. The company distributed the salad kits into 25 U.S. states and three provinces in Canada.

The products recalled from the Soledad, Calif. facility can be identified by a product lot code in the upper right-hand corner beginning with the letter B and with a “best if used by” date between Dec. 23, 2021 and Jan. 8, 2022. The company distributed the salad kits into 30 U.S. states and three provinces in Canada.

No illnesses have been reported with the recalled products to date, but Dole retailers should dispose of these products immediately. Recalled products should not be available for purchase by consumers.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
