WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — Retailer EG America has opened the second Sbarro restaurant in one of its convenience stores in the Columbus, Ohio, market in a plan to add seven such restaurants to area stores this year.

This second restaurant is in a Turkey Hill c-store and is intended to capitalize on pizza’s recent growth in popularity in convenience stores.

Cindy Rantanen, EG America’s senior vice president of food and franchise business brands, said the chain is excited to expand its partnership with Sbarro. “We are thrilled to offer our customers fresh, handmade, authentic New York-style pizza, as well as other Italian favorites,” she said.

Sbarro CEO David Karam said the partnership is a natural.

“Foodservice sales have been the fastest growing segment in the convenience-store industry, generating over $60 billion in revenue and 22% of profits,” Karam said. “Most of the major convenience-store chains have been working to optimize their foodservice offerings, and we believe Sbarro is an ideal fit.”

EG America LLC, Westborough, Mass., is No. 5 on CSP’s 2020 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of retail outlets.
