Godfather’s Pizza, featuring the original Godfather’s menu, is returning to the Northland region of Minnesota and Wisconsin as express locations in convenience stores.
Derek Medved, owner of the KornerStore convenience-store chain, said the first unit will open within nine months in the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood, then expand to more of his locations, he told the Duluth News Tribune.
The express location, which will not offer sitdown dining, will offer made-to-order and take-and-bake pizzas, he told the news outlet. Options including the taco and dessert specialty pizzas will be available.
There were once several locations in the area, but over time they closed, according to the report. Currently, the nearest Godfather’s Pizza to Duluth is a 2.5-hour drive to near the Twin Cities.
"The cornerstone of our industry is not only gas,” Medved told the newspaper. “It’s not just convenience, but it is also foodservice. We do make sure that we are sharpening our pencil to make sure that we’re going to be a competitor for the future.”
Godfather’s specialty pizzas include an all-meat combo, Humble Pie (pepperoni, Italian sausage, diced onions, green peppers and mozzarella cheese), Hot Stuff (pepperoni, seasoned beef, Italian sausage, jalapenos, onions and mozzarella cheese), Hawaiian (ham, pineapple, bacon bits), and bacon cheeseburger.
The Second Pie Deal offers a second large pizza for $10 when buying a large pizza at menu prize. Sides include large and mini cheese sticks, a pepperoni roll and a ham roll.
Omaha, Nebraska-based Godfather’s Pizza, which was founded in 1973, has more than 450 locations nationwide. It is privately owned.
Convenience-store retailer Cubby’s Inc. last spring closed on a deal to buy a traditional Godfather’s Pizza location in Omaha.
