McLane Co. Recognized for Driving Healthier Food Options

Distributor in the running for Partnership for a Healthier America's Partner of the Year Award

TEMPLE, Texas -- Convenience-store distributor McLane Co. is a contender for the Partnership for a Healthier America’s Partner of the Year Award. The supply-chain-services company is nominated for its reach, innovation and positive impact in communities with a higher risk for childhood obesity.

In 2016, McLane became the first supply-chain distributor to partner with the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which works to end childhood obesity within a generation. As part of McLane’s commitment, the company rolled out initiatives that help widen stores’ access to fresh produce, PHA-branded bottled water that reminds consumers to “Drink Up,” and other products that meet the organization’s standards for healthy food and drinks.

Last year, McLane distributed more than 1 billion pounds of fruits and vegetables to foodservice and grocery retailers. The company reduces the barriers to selling fresh produce with free fruit and vegetable point-of-sale kits.

The distributor has also launched a line of private-label products that offer operators healthier options at competitive price points. McLane also offers stores seasonal bundle discounts on the items.

On the corporate side, McLane helps its own team members make healthy choices with free activity trackers, healthier catering options at its meetings and healthy lifestyle tips in its internal publication.

"We are honored to be chosen as a finalist for PHA's Partner of the Year Award for 2018. PHA's initiatives to help end childhood obesity are innovative yet accessible for parents and families, and McLane is delighted to spread the word to our teammates, our customers and consumers nationwide," said Tom Sicola, vice president of marketing for McLane Co.

PHA will choose the winner of its Partner of the Year Award at the 2018 Fit to Celebrate Gala on Sept. 27 in Washington, D.C.

Temple, Texas-based McLane is one of the largest supply-chain-services leaders, providing grocery and foodservice supply-chain solutions for convenience stores, mass merchants, drugstores and chain restaurants throughout the United States. McLane, through McLane Grocery and McLane Foodservice, operates more than 80 distribution centers across the U.S. and one of the nation's largest private fleets.
