Middleby Acquires Espresso Machine Manufacturer

Company's semi-automatic Synesso line joins growing coffee equipment roster

ELGIN, Ill. — Commercial foodservice equipment manufacturer The Middleby Corp. has acquired Synesso, a designer and processor of semi-automatic espresso machines, for an undisclosed amount.

Synesso machines are energy efficient and offer users control of the pressure and temperature at which their espresso is made, the company said.

“Synesso is a highly innovative brand and further expands our coffee and beverage platform,” said Tim Fitzgerald, CEO of Middleby. “Middleby is well-positioned within the beverage category, offering some of the most advanced equipment in today’s fast-growing coffee market. Our Seattle-based coffee companies are able to provide operators with a variety of sought-after options, including automated bean to cup, cold brew, nitro brew, traditional carafe and now semi-automatic espresso.”

This is Middleby’s seventh acquisition of 2019. In January, the company acquired EVO America, a Tualatin, Ore.-based manufacturer of ventless cooking equipment. Two months later, Middleby acquired the Cooking Solutions Group, a division of Allen, Texas-based Standex International Corp. Middleby also acquired equipment producers Ss Brewtech Inc. and Packaging Progressions Inc., as well as software companies Powerhouse Dynamics Inc. and Brava Home Inc. this year.

“There are strong synergies between Synesso and our current U.S. coffee brands Concordia, JoeTap and Ss Brewtech,” Fitzgerald said. “Together, as a group, Middleby is a leader in the industry with coffee diversity and innovation.”

Seattle-based Synesso produces espresso machines, some models with individual brew boilers, programmable temperatures, digital shot timers, removable heat exchangers, cool touch steam wands, ergonomic lever-actuated steam handles and stainless steel steam tips.

Based in Elgin, Ill., Middleby manufacturers commercial fryers, bakery ovens, steamers, blast chillers, combi ovens, grills, mixers, warmers, slicers, panini makers and more. Its beverage line includes single-serve and nitro-brewed coffee, as well as Chewblet ice, blended drinks and soft-serve solutions for liquor and soda.
