NEW YORK —Sugar Foods Corp. on Oct. 15 launched a new sugar substitute under the N’Joy Cares line made with N’Robed Sugar Crystals.
The line includes enrobed sugar packets and flavored turbinado shots. The sugar crystals are made with just two natural ingredients: sugar and zero-calorie Reb-M from fermented sugarcane that coats, or enrobes, the sugar.
Because Reb-M is extracted from sugarcane, and not the stevia leaf, N’Robed Sugar Crystals deliver the same taste and sweetness as plain sugar with no unpleasant aftertaste, the company said. Enrobed sugar crystals are twice as sweet as sugar, requiring half the amount to achieve the same sweetness and thus half the sugar and calories. A single-serve N’Robed Sugar packet contains 5 calories compared with 15 calories in plain sugar, Sugar Foods said.
The sugar crystals perform well in hot and cold drinks and, in addition to tabletop or countertop use, can be used to prepare back-of-house beverages like sweet tea and lemonade. Because half the amount is needed to sweeten compared with table sugar, and because the crystals dissolve in half the time, this translates to cost savings, reduced labor and increased profitability, Sugar Foods said.
According to a 2021 International Food and Information Council study, 72 percent of consumers try to limit or avoid sugars, yet the top barriers to low- and no-calorie sweeteners are undesirable taste and unhealthy perception. Also, 41 percent seek natural sweeteners. The new N’Robed Sugar Crystals are a solution to naturally reducing sugar intake while retaining the taste and texture of table sugar, Sugar Foods said.

N’Robed Sugar Crystals are available in single-serve packets and sticks, pour canisters and bulk bags for back-of-house.
