Ruiz Foods Recalls Select Taquitos Varieties

Move is part of a broader guidance from McCain Foods

DINUBA, Calif. -- Ruiz Food Products Inc. has recalled nearly 2.5 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry taquitos sold in convenience stores, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The company issued the voluntary recall after Toronto-based McCain Foods reported concerns of samonella and listeria contamination for several of its ingredients.

McCain alerted Ruiz about a potential contamination in the caramelized diced onions used in the production of some varieties of beef and cheese taquitos.

The recall includes the following Go-Go Taquitos products:

  • 4.5-pound cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Beef Taco & Cheese Taquitos” with a case code 86183 printed on the label.
  • 4.5-pound cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Buffalo Style Cooked Glazed Chicken Taquitos” with a case code 86006 printed on the label.
  • 4.5-pound cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Chipotle Chicken Wrapped in a Battered Flour Tortilla” with a case code 86019 printed on the label.

“Ruiz Foods remains dedicated to food quality, and the health and safety of its consumers,” said Rachel Cullen, president and CEO of Ruiz Food Products. “Our action ensures that any of our products that incorporated the McCain Foods recalled ingredient are safe. We sincerely apologize to our customers and consumers and regret any inconvenience this may have caused.”

McCain Foods products were involved in another recent recall regarding Prime Deli’s 7-Eleven Salads. The bacon used in the salads contained corn potentially contaminated with samonella and listeria. Hy-Vee also recalled six meat and potato products containing caramelized mushrooms and fire-roasted tomatoes sourced from McCain.

Ruiz Foods Products Inc. is based in Dinuba, Calif. The company’s brands include El Monterey and Tornados.
