Rutter's, Kwik Trip Expand Locations

Foodservice operations grow with renovations

EAST BERLIN, Pa. -- Rutter's Farm Stores on Friday reopened its store in East Berlin, Pa., after a months-long expansion and renovation project. Rutter's nearly doubled the Adams County store's size to 4,640 square feet and expanded its fueling positions from eight to 14.

The store features Rutter's latest foodservice offerings, including custom stir-fry and fresh-baked rolls. Customers can design their own "oriental bowls" by choosing among chicken, beef and pork and among fried rice, white rice, noodles and veggies. They also can select various toppings and dressings.

Sub and cibatta [image-nocss] rolls come in a total of seven varieties and are available for sandwiches or for individual retail purchase.

Other store amenities include a self-serve premium-coffee island, seating, no-fee ATM, and new bathrooms featuring tiled walls, floating ceilings, music and other upscale accents.

Daniel Forster is manager and Amy Fisher is deli manager for the store, which is open 24 hours.

Family-owned and third-generation managed, York, Pa.-based Rutter's operates 51 convenience stores in York, Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania.

Separately, La Crosse, Wis.-based Kwik Trip Inc. plans to expand its operations this fall in northwest Austin, Minn., with the relocation of a Subway restaurant, reported The Post-Bulletin.

"We'll have a lot more space there," Hans Zietlow, director of real estate for Kwik Trip, told the newspaper.

An expanded kitchen area and other foodservice, including a bigger coffee bar, will be part of the major renovation that will add 2,000 square feet to the location, Zietlow added. The checkout counter also will be relocated.

Additional jobs likely will be added with the expanded foodservice, he said.

The Subway restaurant leasing space from the Kwik Trip will move across the street to the former BP gas station property now owned by Kwik Trip, said the report. A new Subway building is planned for construction on that site.

Limited parking has been an issue with the Subway at the Kwik Trip store, the report said.

In August, Kwik Trip opened its second location in Austin after buying the former Severson Conoco gas station.
