Spunkmeyer adds LeanLogistics

And DeIorio 's gets superior safety rating

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- LeanLogistics, a division of CHEP and a provider of Web-native Transportation Management Systems (TMS), announced that Otis Spunkmeyer Inc. chose LeanLogistics On-Demand TMS to facilitate overhauling its distribution operations and lowering transportation spend.

Otis Spunkmeyer is the leading manufacturer and distributor of frozen gourmet cookie dough, ready-baked muffins and other premium bakery products to foodservice facilities and retail outlets throughout the United States, Canada, Central and South America, and Europe.

Otis Spunkmeyer uses On-Demand TMS [image-nocss] for planning, execution and settlement of its transportation processes.

"We selected LeanLogistics after a thorough review of several on-demand and server-based solutions," said Mike Mahon, director of transportation, Otis Spunkmeyer. "Our critical criteria were: ease of implementation and user interaction, flexibility in integrating with current legacy and future ERP systems, and access to a large carrier and shipper network. LeanLogistics has met or exceeded all these criteria."

"LeanLogistics gives customers immediate access to information to consolidate orders, monitor activity, find capacity and make better business decisions," said Dan Dershem, CEO and president, LeanLogistics. "LeanLogistics' On-Demand TMS drives our customers to better business performance through real savings, quick implementation, and improved customer service."

Otis Spunkmeyer will optimize shipments using built-in routing guides, order aggregation and carrier ratings, which will maximize service and minimize costs. Once the loads are submitted, On-Demand TMS tenders the loads to select carriers or through the Private Transportation Marketplace (Spot Market). Otis Spunkmeyer will use WebSettle functionality to handle audits and freight payments, reducing administrative time and expense. On- Demand TMS captures all transactions and activities, enabling Otis Spunkmeyer to mine the extensive database of history to generate reports, make better decisions, and continuously improve the process.

San Leandro, Calif.-based Otis Spunkmeyer's distribution network includes manufacturing facilities in California, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas. The company also operates 52 sales centers throughout the country that store and deliver product to those foodservice and retail accounts that prefer direct-store delivery.

LeanLogistics provides clients with transportation solutions and expertise to manage their supply chain, connect to all their trading partners and continuously maximize their return-on-investment.

Based in Holland, Mich., LeanLogistics was founded by veterans of transportation and third-party logistics.

Separately, DeIorio 's Frozen Dough Products, a part of the Violet Packing family and a pizza, bread and rolls producer, has earned a “superior” rating in a recent American Institute of Baking (AIB) audit. The company achieved a total score of 930 out of a possible 1,000 points from AIB.

The audit was conducted in November 2007 by a professionally trained food safety auditor and took a full day in the plant to complete. The AIB auditor conducted a meticulous inspection of all areas of the plant that affect product integrity, regulatory exposure and pesticide use. Other areas examined included food safety programs, operational methods, management systems, pest control programs, personnel practices and maintenance for food safety and clean practices.

In 2006, DeIorio 's participated in its first AIB audit, which resulted in an “excellent” rating. The current “superior” rating is the highest score a company can achieve, and DeIorio 's plans to continue these audits on an annual basis.

According to Larry Evans, DeIorio 's vice president of operations, “The results of the AIB audit reflect DeIorio 's commitment to quality and excellence. We also participated in Hazard Analysis Critical Control Parts (HACCP) as a further safeguard in preventing any contamination during the entire production process. We are proud to have achieved our goal in earning a ‘Superior ' designation from AIB.”

In 2007, Utica, N.Y.-based DeIorio 's merged with Violet Packing LLC, manufacturer of Don Pepino and Sclafani tomato products based in Williamstown, N.J. DeIorio 's offers more than 100 frozen dough products that are distributed to 33 states and Puerto Rico.
