Three new foodservice products all recently arrived in convenience stores.

Loaded Potato Chowder

Stewart’s Loaded Potato Chowder (top right) features potatoes, bacon, milk, chives and cheddar cheese.

“Made locally in our commercial kitchen in Saratoga, this chowder is gluten free and available only for a limited time,” the Ballston Spa, New York-based c-store chain said.

  • Stewart's Shops is No. 23 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. c-store chains by number of company-owned retail outlets.

The offering “allows us to use fresh, quality ingredients such as our award-winning milk,” the company said. “Sourced from family-owned local farms, our milk is picked up, processed, bottled and delivered to shops within 48 hours of leaving the farm.”

Stewart’s Shops will be dishing out hot cups of chowder during the 2025 Saratoga Chowder Fest on Feb. 8.

Chicken Nuggets

Alexandria, Louisiana-based branded chicken provider Krispy Krunchy Chicken, which is in more than 3,200 locations, is now selling new Chicken Nuggets (bottom right).

“They are made with whole-muscle white chicken breast, marinated in a proprietary blend of seasonings and coated in a special ‘krunchy’ breading,” the company said, adding that the nuggets are fried until golden brown in small batches.

“Our development team has expertly perfected the recipe so that every bite provides a burst of flavor,” said Jim Norberg, CEO of Krispy Krunchy Chicken. “The top three reasons people seek out Krispy Krunchy are the quality of our food, our exceptional value and our craveable menu items. These nuggets embody all three.”

For a limited time at participating locations, consumers can enjoy a six-piece order of Krispy Krunchy chicken nuggets, served with one dipping sauce, for $4.99, or can choose the 10-piece order, served with two dipping sauces, for $6.99 (in-store pricing only; slightly more expensive via delivery).

The dipping sauces are honey mustard, ranch, BBQ, buffalo, sweet and sour, and the original Krispy Krunchy sauce. For a complete meal, customers can add a side item like wedge fries, mac and cheese or honey biscuits.

Banana Dunker

Finally, La Crosse, Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip has a new banana-flavored Dunker doughnut (left).

  • Kwik Trip is No. 11 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.

Kwik Trip in June debuted a Pink Lemonade Dunker flavor for a limited time. Other flavors are chocolate, blueberry and creme. Raspberry was a limited-time flavor at the start of 2024.

RaceTrac enters uncharted territory with its Potbelly acquisition

The Bottom Line: There has never been a purchase of a restaurant chain the size of the sandwich brand Potbelly by a convenience-store chain. History suggests it could be a difficult road.

Wondering about Wonder

Marc Lore's food startup is combining c-stores, restaurants, meal kits and delivery into a single "mealtime platform." Can it be greater than the sum of its parts?
