Use of Retailer Meal Solutions Fluctuates

Consumer trend moves from weekly buying to monthly

CHICAGO -- As prepared-foods selections from supermarkets, convenience stores and other retailers have increased in quality and variety, these stores have become serious foodservice alternatives to restaurants.

However, frequent usage of retailer meal solutions is down a bit from two years ago, with only 24% saying they purchase ready-to-eat items at retail stores on a weekly basis, vs. 29% two years ago, according to a survey of consumers conducted by Technomic and reported in a recent American Express MarketBriefing.

Conversely, the number of infrequent purchasers has risen. Buying such items one to three times a month remains the most typical pattern, the survey said..
