WAWA, Pa. — Convenience-store retailer Wawa is accepting nominations for its third annual Future Food Scientist Program, a field trip to the Wawa Innovation Center for eighth grade students to explore careers in food science through interactive stations on nutrition, sensory testing, food safety and marketing.

The chain awards the trip to one class. After the event, students who attended can pitch a food recipe to Wawa’s culinary experts for the chance of having it featured in a Wawa store.

“Wawa is proud to continue its commitment to the community by inviting local students into our test kitchen to have a hands-on, innovative experience as they explore potential careers in food science,” said Mike Sherlock, chief product marketing officer for Wawa. “This program enables us to fulfill lives in new ways by sharing our values and commitment to quality food while enriching the curriculum of our local schools.”

Class nominations are open until Feb. 7. To apply, a teacher or faculty member must submit an electronic application and explain why Wawa’s program would benefit the classroom curriculum.

Wawa debuted its Future Food Scientist program in May 2018. The winners, students from Garnet Valley Middle School in Glen Mill, Pa., saw their Chicken & Waffle recipe featured as a limited-time offer at a local Wawa store. The second program launched in August 2019, and the winners hailed from P.S. duPont Middle School in Wilmington, Del.; the students will reveal their recipe for Wawa in March 2020.

Wawa, based in Wawa, Pa., has more than 830 c-stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida. The chain is No. 9 on CSP’s 2019 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of company-owned retail outlets.
