WAWA, Pa. — Wawa has become the latest convenience-store retailer to offer plant-based meats with its new non-meat version of its Sizzli breakfast sandwich, which is now available at 650 locations in the Mid-Atlantic and will arrive in all 220 of the chain's stores in Florida on Aug. 10.

The new Sizzli is made with Beyond Breakfast Sausage—produced by plant-based manufacturer Beyond Meat—and contains peas, brown rice and other ingredients. The sandwich is served with egg and cheese on a bagel. It is free of GMOs, soy, gluten and artificial additives.

“We’re pleased to offer Beyond Breakfast Sausage, a new and innovative plant-based protein option to our customers to continue fulfilling lives as a food and beverage destination for everyone,” said Mike Sherlock, chief product marketing officer for Wawa. “We know that consumers are looking for more plant-based options and we’re proud to partner with Beyond Meat, a leader in plant-based meat, to offer our customers more choice through the Wawa Your Way initiative.”

Beyond Breakfast sausage is also available to order and customize via Wawa’s touchscreen system in the form of breakfast bowls and breakfast burritos in addition the bagel sandwich.

“Wawa is a cult favorite brand and we’re excited to partner with them to introduce several new breakfast options made with Beyond Breakfast Sausage,” said Chuck Muth, chief growth officer of Beyond Meat. “These new on-the-go options not only taste great but will make plant-based meat more accessible to more consumers.”

Plant-based meat alternatives also skyrocketed in 2019: Nearly a quarter (23%) of all consumers and 29% of millennials said they would consider ordering plant-based burgers at a foodservice establishment, according to the Convenience Market 2019 Annual Report by CSP’s sister research firm, Technomic. Besides Wawa, consumers can dabble in plant-based burgers and sandwiches at a handful of c-store chains today, including Rutter’s, Sheetz, GetGo and others.

El Segundo, Calif.-based Beyond Meat Inc. manufactures plant-based meat substitutes for more than 53,000 retail and foodservice outlets. Besides the Beyond Meat Sausage its products include Beyond Burgers, Beyond Beef, Beyond Beef Crumbles and Beyond Meat Pizza.

Wawa c-stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C. The Wawa, Pa.-based company reached the milestone of its 900th store in June. The chain is No. 10 on CSP’s 2020 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of retail outlets.
