In 2014, Laval, Quebec-based Alimentation Couche-Tard purchased the 1,500-store chain known as The Pantry and its Kangaroo store and fuel brand. Based in Cary, N.C., The Pantry was one of the first major industry consolidators, making headlines with multiple deals that resulted in one of the largest publicly traded convenience retailers in the United States.

In 2015, Couche-Tard announced it would brand all of its stores Circle K, including the Kangaroo chain. By early 2017, many stores still had the Kangaroo logo on the street sign but had Circle K banners placed over store doors.

Couche-Tard has approximately 8,000 convenience stores throughout the United States and Canada, 6,579 of which sell fuel under various flags. Most are freestanding and located on or near busy intersections. The design of the stores is based on attracting customers in their local markets rather than conforming to a single model, with the average store being 2,000 to 2,500 square feet. Some of its newer stores are more than 4,000 square feet.
