CARB Certifies ISD

Veeder-Root diagnostics unit ready for use in vapor recovery systems

SIMSBURY, Conn. -- The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has certified the Veeder-Root In-Station Diagnostics (ISD) system for use in monitoring the fuel vapor recovery systems required by California's air quality regulations.

ISD monitoring equipment is a required component of the enhanced vapor recovery (EVR) systems mandated by California regulations that limit the amount of fuel vapors allowed to escape into the atmosphere during automotive fueling.

The Veeder-Root ISD system was developed to work in tandem with the Veeder-Root [image-nocss] TLS-350/EMC automatic tank gauging systems and was certified in conjunction with the Healy Stage II EVR system. The Healy/Veeder-Root EVR/ISD system is the first CARB approved EVR/ISD solution.

Regulations that went into effect this month require that new California gas stations with an annual throughput of more than 1.8 million gallons be equipped with an approved ISD system. New stations with an annual throughput of between 600 thousand and 1.8 million gallons will be subject to the ISD requirement beginning in April 2006. Existing stations must install the ISD equipment within four years of the regulation's effective date for new stations in their throughput classification.

The certification of the ISD system is the result of close cooperation between Veeder-Root, fuel retailers and California regulatory officials, said Veeder-Root president Brian Burnett. California retailers are ready to take the steps necessary to comply with the state's air quality regulations, and Veeder-Root is pleased that we are able to provide a critical part of the EVR solution.

The ISD unit consists of vapor flow sensors that measure the volume of fuel vapors collected during each vehicle fueling operation; a vapor pressure sensor that continuously checks for leaks and excess pressure in the vapor containment tanks; and software in the TLS 350 that processes the data and posts the results.

Simsbury, Conn.-based Veeder-Root, Part of Gilbarco Veeder-Root, is a global supplier of automatic tank gauging and fuel management systems, including the Red Jacket brand of submersible pumps and pressurized line leak detectors.
