Classic Car Owners Receive Classic Gas Pricing (Slideshow)

At vintage service station, 1950s attendants pump fuel at cost from year car was made

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. -- To celebrate National Collector Car Appreciation Day, Hagerty Classic Car Magazine on July 11 transformed a Mobil gas station on historic Woodward Avenue in Birmingham, Mich., into a full-service station from the past, complete with classic gasoline prices.

Hagerty brought back the service station experience from America's golden automotive era, serving more than 200 classic cars more than 1,400 gallons of gas. Attendants clad in 1950s gas station uniforms filled tanks at the price from the year the car was made (starting at 25 cents per gallon) and washed windows while a jukebox played hits from the 50s and 60s.

"As a classic car enthusiast, I appreciate the event," said Bob Kitner, owner of a 1971 Chevrolet Corvette. "I really appreciate the gas prices--36 cents a gallon is great."

In addition to transforming the station on Woodward Avenue, fans across the country can enter to win free gas cards by sharing their collector car stories on Hagerty's website, Hagerty.com/yourstories. The stories that receive the most likes and comments on Facebook will receive one of 100 gas gift cards.

This is the fifth annual National Collector Car Appreciation Day, which is celebrated around the country with classic car rallies and events. The day was created to bring awareness to the integral role collector cars have played in fostering the nation's appreciation for the automobile's unique historical place in the culture.

"National Collector Car Appreciation Day is a great way for us to celebrate our belief that 'Life's Better in a Classic','' said McKeel Hagerty, executive publisher of Hagerty Classic Car Magazine and CEO of Hagerty. "We shared a very special experience with classic car owners by recreating the moment in time when their classic cars were new. It's a nice way to recognize owners for their appreciation and for carrying on the tradition of automotive history."

Based in Traverse City, Mich., Hagerty Classic Cars Magazine is a quarterly classic and collector car publication with a circulation of almost 400,000.
