BP oil spill, Casey's vs. Couche-Tard were big, but two other retailers claim No. 1
OAK BROOK, Ill.-- Many retailers and suppliers can sum up 2010 in two letters: BP. The major oil company's spill in the Gulf of Mexico led readers' list of the top stories on the year in terms of both industry-related news and general news in two CSP Daily News polls this week.

About 29% of respondents said the "oil spill's effect on retail" was the top industry story, while about 30% called the spill the top story beyond gasoline/convenience retailing.

Alimentation Couche-Tard's unsuccessful hostile-takeover attempt of Casey's General Stores earned the No. 2 [image-nocss] spot on the industry-related poll with about 19% of the vote, while "interchange-fee reform" took the No. 3 spot with about 13% of the vote. Positions four and five went to "health-care reform" and "the overall effect of the poor economy on the industry," respectively.

The ongoing saga of a possible Casey's General Stores sale, however, drew the most eyeballs to CSP Daily News, where stories of the takeover effortincluding two stories on 7-Eleven's entry into the fray--earned five spots on a list of the top 10 most-read stories of the year.
