TA Touts DEF Island Installs

And Iron Skillet cheers up wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital
WESTLAKE, Ohio -- TravelCenters of America LLC has confirmed its on-island Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dispenser roll out. TA expects to install about 50 on-island DEF dispensers at locations across the country in 2011, it said. Installations will use new dispenser and point-of-sale (POS) systems that will make purchasing DEF quicker, more efficient and customer friendly, said the company.

Sites will feature dedicated DEF dispensers at the fueling islands, while large storage tanks will be installed away from the fuel island.

Thomas M. O'Brien, president and CEO of [image-nocss] TA, said, "The technology we will employ integrates the DEF dispenser with our point of sale and other systems so that drivers can purchase fuel and diesel exhaust fluid in a single transaction."

TA- and Petro-branded locations currently offer 2.5-gallon containers of DEF at all 228 locations, available at the fuel desk, travel store or truck maintenance counters, and all of the company's RoadSquad emergency roadside vehicles carry a supply of DEF.

TA's on-island DEF dispenser installations will further add to current capacity; the first five locations are the TA in Lodi, Ohio, and Nashville, Tenn. (reopening February 2011) and the Petro Stopping Centers locations in Spokane, Wash., Kingman, Ariz., and El Paso, Texas.

Further, because nearly all TA and Petro locations offer extensive truck maintenance services, TA expects to offer DEF top-off services as part of routine preventive maintenance, or PM service to vehicles that use DEF.

In other company news, TA and Petro full-service restaurant guests were recently invited to select and sign a holiday card for wounded servicemen and servicewomen recuperating at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The holiday cheer was the idea of Anita Darrow, a Petro Iron Skillet restaurant employee in Corning, Calif. She invited guests to sign a card for a wounded soldier she knew. Her idea quickly spread throughout the entire restaurant network and thousands of employees and guests quickly joined in the effort.

"We are grateful for our brave service men and women who fight for our freedom everyday," said O'Brien. "Their selfless giving of themselves to provide the gift of freedom to each of us deserves to be recognized and we thank our guests; professional truck drivers, motorists, adults and children alike, for taking the time to bring a smile to their faces during this holiday season."

Darrow and all of the staff will be recognized for her caring attitude with a plaque to be displayed inside the Iron Skillet restaurant.

Headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, TA is a leading national chain of travel centers in 41 states and Canada under the TravelCenters of America and Petro brands. With convenient locations on interstate exits, TA offers its customers diesel and gasoline fueling services, full and quick-service restaurants, heavy-truck maintenance services, 24-hour convenience stores, RoadSquad roadside assistance, electronic communication (WiFi) and other services all within large, high-traffic facilities.
