Techies Team Up to Fuel Rutter's

Olives joins retailer for both fuel and technology growth

YORK, Pa. -- Formerly with the Turkey Hill chain and more recently with technology consultancy Impact 21, Gabe Olives will become the newest tech-focused industry vet to join the Rutter's Farm Stores chain.

As reported in CSP Daily News in late April, Derek Gaskins, formerly of Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores (MACS), Richmond, Va., joined Rutter's to help with social media as its new chief engagement officer.

Taking on the role of fuels director at Rutter's, Olives had done extensive work with what is now the NACS Petroleum Convenience Alliance for Technical Standards (PCATS) organization over the years, both as a member of Conestoga, Pa.-based Turkey Hill, which is a part of the Cincinnati-based Kroger group of c-stores, and later as a consultant with Lexington, Ky.-based Impact 21.

"We are very pleased to have Gabe join our senior management team," said Scott Hartman, president and CEO of the 57-store Rutter's chain. "Gabe's broad experience in the c-store industry, which includes technology, will be a great addition to our team. Strategically, technology is integrated into most everything we do at Rutter's. Gabe's primary responsibility will be continuing to grow our fuels business, while managing the increasing complexity of the supply chain. We have had some really great growth years and look forward to continuing the trend with our newest addition moving our ever-changing model forward."

On site at the NACS's The Tech Event and PCATS meeting in Dallas last week, Olives told CSP Daily News he looks forward to his new role at Rutter's, having had a long history in both technology and fuels. He said he appreciates traveling less than in his consultancy role and that the commute now will be similar to his days with Turkey Hill.

Olives has more than 25 years of experience with fuel supply, including operations, marketing, terminal-to-retail oil distribution and construction. At Turkey Hill, he was a senior executive with responsibility for petroleum marketing, information technology and legislative affairs for its Minit Markets chain.

He currently sits on the NACS technology committee and serves on the board of directors of PCATS, as well as being its chairman in 2009. He currently chairs the quality assurance committee of PCATS.

York, Pa.-based Rutter's Farm Stores is a third-generation, family-owned business; it operates convenience stores located throughout central Pennsylvania.
