"Mark had a presence and charisma that made an impression the first time you met him," said spokesperson Tracey Hughes in a statement. "He was extremely knowledgeable about the industry and had a work ethic second to none; however, [image-nocss] Mark's greatest asset was his network of many friends and colleagues. Mark was a strong leader and an extraordinary person. He was fun and engaging to be around and will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved him. In addition to the time and energy he put into Wallis Cos., he loved and spent time with his wife Tami and their four children, Andrew, Aaron, Alex and Ashley. Among his survivors are his mother, Kathleen Martinovich, three sisters, one brother, brothers and sister in-law, nieces, nephews, family and friends."

As a leader in the convenience store industry, Mark was the immediate past president of the Missouri Petroleum & Convenience Store Association and has served on its board since 2000.

"Mark was a mentor to so many of our employees", said Rachel Andreasson, vice president of organizational development for Wallis Cos. "While we are heart-broken by Mark's death, I am certain the leaders he groomed will continue his legacy by working together to achieve the shared vision of Wallis Cos. We will always remember the lessons he taught us. Wallis has a strong leadership team, and Mark set the example of how to build relationships, foster alliances and seize opportunities for growth. Mark's leadership and guidance as chief operating officer was instrumental in Wallis's success during his 15 years with the company."
