Warehouse retailer Costco will build its first standalone gas station in Mission Viejo, California, according to documents obtained by CSP from the city.

The fuel-only location will be available to Costco members only and will be located at 25732 El Paseo, which currently is home to a shuttered Bed, Bath & Beyond.

City spokesman Robert Schick told CSP that construction is expected to begin in the fall with an expected completion date in spring 2026. The discretionary application was approved by the city’s planning and transportation commission on March 10.

This will be Costco’s largest fuel facility, with 40 gas pumps, Schick said. The plans do not include other automotive or retail sales at the facility.

“The city of Mission Viejo is excited that Costco will build its first standalone gas station in Mission Viejo and become a new business partner for the Freeway Center, Mission Viejo Mayor Bob Ruesch told CSP. This 40-pump fuel station will help Mission Viejo and neighboring residents with their fueling needs.

The Issaquah, Washington-based company reported during its third-quarter earnings call that it saw record fuel sales at its member-only stations.

“The combination of expanded gas station hours, new gas station openings and lower prices at the pump have led us to having two of our all-time highest gallon weeks in the U.S. during the last month,” Costco CEO Ron Vachris said, according to an AlphaSense transcript of the May 29th call.
