ExxonMobil Retail Entering Mexico

Mobil-branded gasoline stations slated to open in second-half 2017

MEXICO CITY -- ExxonMobil is the latest global oil company to enter the Mexican market.

The first Mobil-branded gasoline station is slated to open in central Mexico during the second half of 2017, with more planned for later this year, the company announced. The oil major plans to make a $300 million investment over the next decade in fuels logistics, product inventories and marketing to support retail, wholesale, industrial and commercial customers.

ExxonMobil has operated in Mexico for more than 130 years, primarily in the chemicals and lubricants businesses, and oil and gas exploration. In opening its first retail locations in the newly deregulated Mexican fuel market, it joins BP, which opened its first branded retail site in the country earlier this year in Mexico City. While BP had said it would open around 1,500 locations within the next five years, ExxonMobil did not disclose its own site-count plans as of press time.

“Recent energy reforms present a unique opportunity to help meet the growing demand for reliable fuel supplies and quality service in Mexico,” said Martin Proske, Mexico fuels director for ExxonMobil Fuels, Lubricants & Specialties Marketing Co., Fairfax, Va. “ExxonMobil’s presence will help give consumers new choices to purchase our high-quality products.”

This would include the Synergy product line of engine-cleaning fuels, which ExxonMobil claims offers better responsiveness and fuel economy than gasoline that meets Mexico’s minimum government standards. The company will market the fuel package as Mobil Synergy Extra, Mobil Synergy Supreme+ and Mobil Synergy diesel.

“Our new Synergy line of fuels, coupled with modern equipment and station image, is part of our continued effort to deliver innovation at our branded stations,” said Proske. “We are always looking for ways to enhance our customers’ experiences and overall satisfaction with our products and services.”

ExxonMobil will be periodically testing the fuel quality at Mobil-branded sites in Mexico through its Guaranteed Fuels program, as well as fuel-dispenser operation and security.

Based in Irving, Texas, ExxonMobil has more than 26,000 branded sites in more than 35 countries.
