Gilbarco Debuts EMV Savings for Chevron Retailers

Branded marketers can upgrade dispensers' POS and other technologies

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Chevron- and Texaco-branded marketers can now take advantage of a program through Gilbarco Veeder-Root to upgrade gasoline dispensers to EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) security standards.

Chevron Corp. has partnered with Gilbarco on the limited-time program to help its branded retailers upgrade to EMV-compliant dispensers in advance of the 2020 deadline.

All gasoline retailers in the United States have until Oct. 1, 2020, to update the point-of-sale systems in their fuel pumps to accept chip-enabled credit and debit cards to improve security. Those that don’t face fines from Visa and MasterCard.

Participants in the Gilbaro program will also be able to add other technology upgrades such as NFC (near field communication) readers to provide contactless payment.

“It is important to us that our retailers upgrade to EMV quickly,” said Kevin Gousse, retail programs manager for Chevron. “We are working with Gilbarco to offer an exclusive program to make the process of upgrading to EMV easier and more cost-effective for our retailers. In addition to EMV, this program includes the latest dispenser technologies to help our retailers prepare their business for the future.”

In November 2017, Gilbarco processed what is said to be North America’s first EMV chip-card transaction at a fuel dispenser, at an Exxon-branded site in North Carolina. Its Passport point-of-sale (POS) system has been able to support in-store EMV transactions since May 2016. According to Gilbarco, Passport locations can be configured and enabled to process full EMV transactions at the dispenser after simple software upgrades for all major card types as the POS software is released.

“With the point-of-sale software now being released to ‘turn on’ chip payments at the pump, we see leading retailers really making an effort to reach full EMV compliance in advance of the 2020 deadline,” said Mark Williams, vice president of North America marketing for Gilbarco. “We’re pleased to work closely with Chevron to help its network secure their forecourt and protect their customers.”

San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron has nearly 8,000 Chevron- and Texaco-branded stations in the United States.
