Rutter's Building Eco-Friendly Store

And new Maverik c-stores coming to Carson City, Reno, Nevada, areas
STEWARTSTOWN, Pa. -- Rutter's Farm Stores has broken ground on a second location in Stewartstown, Pa., that will be its biggest and most environmentally friendly store yet, the company said. And on the other side of the country, construction crews are working on the site of a new Maverik gas station and convenience store in Carson City, Nevada, to open in December.

The 5,750-square-foot Rutter's store is expected to open in December on the site of a former parking lot. A house on the lot will be used by Eureka Fire Co. for training before it is razed in September.

The [image-nocss] store will create 40 jobs. York, Pa.-based Rutter's plans to continue to operate its existing store in Stewartstown.

The new store will be the first Rutter's to make use of skylights19 of themthat will reduce the need for artificial lighting. The skylights will complement a white roof, which will keep the building cooler while reducing energy demand. In a couple of other Rutter's firsts, the store will have energy-saving triple-glazed windows and all-LED exterior lights.

Rutter's said it recently became the first c-store chain to join 32 other retail organizations in the U.S. Department of Energy's Retailer Energy Alliance, whose mission is to promote the energy-efficient design and operation of retail locations.

"In this case, bigger is definitely better," said Scott Hartman, president and CEO of Rutter's Farm Stores. "We've increased the store's size to accommodate more seating and a larger kitchen, both of which will enhance the customer experience. But we've also added skylights and better-insulated windows so that we can be even better stewards of the environment. These things matter to customers, and they mean a great deal to Rutter's."

The store will have 20 fueling positions (including four that also will offer diesel) in front and two dedicated diesel islands in back, as well as an all-glass, two-bay automatic car wash.

The 24-hour store will feature Rutter's latest foodservice offerings, including a recently introduced dinner menu and kids meal; custom stir fry and fajitas; and fresh-baked sub and ciabatta rolls. A premium-coffee island, touchscreen ordering, seating for 15, public restrooms and a surcharge-free M&T Bank ATM are among the other amenities.

The store will feature Rutter's award-winning design, including open ceilings, floor and wall tiles, and restrooms with floating ceilings, music and other upscale accents.

Family-owned and third-generation managed, Rutter's operates 56 c-stores in York, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, along with the new location in Carson City, North Salt Lake City, Utah-based Maverik Inc. is planning to open another location in Dayton, Nevada, reported The Nevada Appeal.. Maverik has 200 locations in seven states. These will be the first in the Carson City and Reno areas, the report said.

"We are looking forward to being in this area," Jason Keith, a real estate representative for Maverik, told the newspaper. "We have an adventure/outdoor theme that we hope will go well with the market."

Keith said the Carson City location will be more than 4,600 square feet, making it one of, if not the biggest, c-store in the area. Maverik stores have onsite bakeries that provide the bread for their sandwiches.

"We feel really confident about our offerings in the store," Keith said. "We have a lot of food that is prepared in the store."

Keith also said that Maverik will be competitive with gasoline prices. It also offers the Adventure Club Card, which gives customers discounts on fuel and bonus points that can earn gift cards. "It's a little different than what is currently out there," Keith said. "We know there is a lot of competition, but we feel we are a tad different."
