HOUSTON —Shell is offering a special discount to California Fuel Rewards members who purchase its new V-Power Nitro Plus premium-grade gasoline.
The promotion, exclusive to California, offers Fuel Rewards members a 10-cent-per-gallon (CPG) discount on every purchase of at least 5 gallons of Shell V-Power Nitro Plus premium-grade gasoline at its more than 1,600 branded locations in the state. The promotion ends Jan. 5, 2020.
Why is California getting special attention? Shell points to the state having some of the highest gas prices in the country. According to AAA, California’s average for premium-grade gasoline was $3.862 per gallon on Aug. 22, more than 67 CPG higher than the nationwide average of $3.191 per gallon. In May, when California’s average reached $1.20 more than the national average, the state’s energy commission proposed a study to examine the possible reasons, citing everything from refinery outages to potential market manipulation, the Los Angeles Times reported. Oil industry groups cited market forces, California’s environmental regulations and a 2017 gas-tax increase as the causes.
Shell has been promoting its new premium-grade formulation since its debut this summer. It describes V-Power Nitro Plus as its “best, most advanced fuel ever,” offering friction reduction and protection from engine gunk, wear and corrosion.
Separately, Shell is set to end this summer’s Great Gas Giveaway, which has been awarding four daily grand-prize winners free fuel for a year—with 420 winners total—as well as 50,000 other prizes, including $100 and $50 Shell gift cards. Fuel Rewards members who buy Shell-branded fuel are entered into the promotion, which ends Sept. 1, 2019.
Houston-based Shell has approximately 13,000 branded gas stations in the United States.
