Spinx Upgrades its EV Offer

Chain installs fast Level 3 charging stations throughout South Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Spinx now offers Level 3 electric-vehicle (EV) charging at more than a half-dozen sites in South Carolina.

The chain has offered EV charging since 2011 at a handful of locations, all Level 1 or 2 chargers, which take several hours to fully charge a battery. These latest sites are Spinx’s first Level 3 DC Fast chargers, which provide a nearly full charge in about 30 minutes.

Spinx partnered with Nissan on its “No Charge to Charge” program, where eligible Nissan Leaf EV owners receive 24 months of free charging at participating Level 2 and 3 public charging sites. While the charging stations are part of the Nissan program, they also can service any EV that has the right charging port.

The seventh Spinx Level 3 location, at a store in Greenville, had a grand opening this past week, featuring a charging demonstration with a Nissan Leaf, which can drive up to 100 miles on one full charge. It is the culmination of a rollout dating back to May, when Spinx opened its first Level 3 site at another Greenville store.

Spinx chose each of the seven sites for their traffic counts and proximity to a highway and interstate motorists. Five of the Level 3 charging stations are in the upstate market, with the remaining two in the Columbia and Charleston markets.

In offering EV charging, Spinx joins other chains such as Royal Farms, Sheetz and Ricker's. The retailer's alternative fuel offer also includes compressed natural gas and E85, an 85% ethanol blend.

The following Spinx sites feature Level 3 chargers:

  • 1414 E. Washington St. and 901 Marue Drive  in Greenville
  • 697 Fairview Road in Simpsonville
  • 7495 Augusta Road in Piedmont
  • 1504 Boiling Springs Road in Spartanburg
  • 8001 Broad River Road in Irmo
  • 9636 Highway 78 in Ladson

Based in Greenville, S.C., Spinx operates 80 convenience stores in South Carolina.
