QUINCY, Mass. — Supermarket chain Stop & Shop has launched a new program to offset tailpipe emissions for its fuel customers.

The retailer has partnered with GreenPrint, an environmental technology company providing turnkey sustainability programs, to launch the Restore program at 105 fueling sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Through the program, GreenPrint will calculate and arrange offsets on up to 30% of the tailpipe emissions of each Stop & Shop fuel purchase. These offsets include investments in certified carbon-reduction projects such as reforestation and renewable energy initiatives including wind and solar.

According to Stop & Shop and GreenPrint, this program is the first of its kind in New England.

“We’re committed to running our business sustainably and responsibly,” said Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop, Quincy, Mass. “Together with our customers, we’re reducing our environmental impact and helping the communities we serve. We’re proud to be a part of the solution when it comes to climate change, and to be leading the way in terms of fuel emissions reductions in our industry."

GreenPrint will provide Stop & Shop with real-time audited reporting on carbon emissions, purchased and retired offsets and project investments.

“We are excited to work with Stop & Shop to help them meet the needs of today’s consumers in a purpose-driven way with an eye on a better tomorrow through more sustainable practices,” said Pete Davis, founder and CEO of GreenPrint.

To celebrate the launch of the Restore program, Stop & Shop has committed to plant 100,000 trees in its local communities with the Arbor Day Foundation. It will also make a charitable donation to community partners in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts to reduce the effects of emissions from fuel.

Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC is a unit of Ahold Delhaize USA. It operates more than 400 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey. Stop & Shop’s other sustainability efforts include its green energy facility in Massachusetts, where it converts inedible food products from its New England stores into clean energy, and eliminating single-use plastic bags from stores in Connecticut.

Stop & Shop is the second Ahold Delhaize grocery brand to partner with GreenPrint on a reduced-emissions program. In May 2018, GreenPrint partnered with Giant Martin's at its Giant Food Stores and Martin’s Food Markets on a similar program. C-store chains that have launched programs with GreenPrint include 7-Eleven, SpeedyQ Markets, Tri Star Energy, Home Service Oil and The Pride Stores.
