C-Store Community Service Roundup: Fuel, Toys for Tots & Pork Rinds

Initiatives by Alon Brands, Cumberland Farms, Irving Oil, Love’s, Lykins, more

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. – ‘Tis the season to give, and convenience-store retailers and suppliers are doing just that. Toys for Tots, the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, CASA and United Way are just a few of the organizations receiving support.

Here are some recent examples:

  • Alon Brands. Alon Brands’ Abilene, Texas, region held a water-balloon fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in September, raising $8,871 for 11 more children to attend camp next year.
  • Cumberland Farms. For the 10th consecutive year, Framingham, Mass.-based Cumberland Farms is accepting applications for the Believe & Achieve Scholarship Program, which will provide financial assistance to more than 100 high school seniors. Since founding the program in 2006, the company has provided more than $1 million dollars in scholarships to more than 1,000 students. The 2016 application period runs from now until Dec. 15.
  • Irving Oil. Saint John, N.B.-based Irving Oil hosted its first Fuel the Care Day in October, donating $1 from every fillup to its Fuel the Care program, which helps local families with hospital travel costs. Since 2002, Fuel the Care has helped more than 50,000 families.
  • Love’s Travel Stops. Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. raised $2.15 million during a in-store campaign for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The amount raised this year was the largest in Love’s 17-year history of supporting CMN Hospitals. Love’s, Oklahoma City, has raised more than $14 million for the nonprofit since 1998.
  • Lykins Energy Solutions. Proceeds from Lykins’ annual golf outing raised $60,000 for CASA for Clermont Kids. Clermont County, Ohio-based Lykins Energy Solutions has raised more than $470,000 for CASA since the group was named the beneficiary of the company golf outing in 2000. 
  • Stripes Convenience Stores. Corpus Christi, Texas-based Stripes Convenience Stores raised $525,000 at its eighth annual Stripes Turf + Surf fundraising event benefiting 50 United Way agencies across its market areas: Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Since 2008, Stripes has raised more than $3 million for United Way agencies through its Turf + Surf fundraisers.
  • VERC Enterprises. VERC Enterprises, Duxbury, Mass., raised $11,207 for breast cancer research in the Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, besting the company’s goal of $10,000.
  • Rudolph Foods Company Inc. Ohio-basedRudolph Foods has announced its fifth annual Pork Rind Appreciation Day campaign to be celebrated on Super Bowl Sunday. Rudolph Foods is teaming up with Hall of Famer Bobby Bell to support the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides medical and financial assistance to former National Football League players in need.
  • Snyder’s-Lance Inc. Partial proceeds from Charlotte, N.C.-based Snyder’s-Lance seasonal snack offerings will benefit families in need through a partnership with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Select retailers will have specially-marked Toys for Tots displays with snacks from Snyder’s of Hanover, Lance, Cape Cod, Archway and Stella D'oro. For the first 500,000 packages sold, Snyder’s-Lance will make a contribution to support Toys for Tots up to $25,000 through Dec. 31.
