Initiatives by CPD, CST, Love’s, Minnoco, Parker’s, NOCO, Weigel’s, GSP

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- From St. Jude’s Children’s hospital to Big Brothers Big Sisters, deserving children have been the recipients of several charity campaigns hosted by convenience-store retailers and suppliers.

Weigel’s Christmas shopping spree

Here are some recent examples:

CPD Energy Corp. New Paltz, N.Y.-based CPD Energy Corp. donated $96,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The amount raised was the result of efforts throughout 2015 at company-operated convenience stores and gas stations, including the October Pumpkin Pinup Event and the annual Bass & Bluefish fishing tournament.

CST Brands. The San Antonio-based parent company of Corner Store wrapped up its Country Run 10-city 5K series, raising $1.4 million for charity. CEO Kim Lubel presented a check for $750,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America; an additional $450,000 will go to various children’s charities in each market; and in Canada, the run raised $235,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Montreal and other charitable causes.

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores. The Love’s 654 team, Union City, Okla., donated $2,000 to Union City’s first Shop with a Cop program, which provides resources for families and children to shop for holiday gifts and meals.

Minnoco. Minnoco gasoline retailers raised $13,000 for Hope Chest for Breast Cancer through a six-week campaign “Fueling the Fight Against Breast Cancer.” For every gallon of unleaded plus gasoline (containing 15% ethanol) sold, Minnoco stores--with support from Prime the Pump, a private ethanol organization--donated 2 cents per gallon. Minnoco (Minnesota Independent Oil Co.) is a fuel brand developed for the members of the Minnesota Service Station & Convenience Store Association (MSSA).

Parker’s. Through the Savannah, Ga.-based company’s Fueling the Community program, Parker’s donated $5,000 each to Bryan County Public Schools and Liberty County Public Schools. Parker’s donates a portion of the proceeds from every gallon of gas purchased at all 40 of its convenience stores on the first Wednesday of each month to community schools through the program.

NOCO. NOCO Express, Tonawanda, N.Y., donated $13,000 to support the Salvation Army of Buffalo. Throughout the month of November, paper kettles were sold for $1 each at all NOCO Express’ 35 locations to benefit the Salvation Army.

Weigel’s Stores. The Knoxville, Tenn.-based convenience retailer organized and funded a Christmas shopping spree for 200 area children. Each child was given $150 to spend at Kmart. This was the 18th year Weigel’s has teamed with the Salvation Army for the program, and since its inception in 1998, it has helped more than 3,200 children.

GSP. As part of a holiday tradition, Clearwater, Fla.-based GSP, a leading provider of retail services for convenience stores, announced it would donate to several charities including Give Kids The World Village, United Cerebral Palsy, American Red Cross and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
