7-Eleven to Expand in Maryland

Retailer could open as many as 50 new stores in "Old Line State"

DALLAS -- 7-Eleven Inc., which has been expanding in Maryland for several years, could open as many as 50 new stores during the next several months, according to a report by the Baltimore Business Journal.

Last week, the company also announced plans to open 15 to 20 convenience stores this year in the Jacksonville, Fla., market, with up to 80 stores possible by 2015 (see Related Content below for CSP Daily News coverage).

The retailer has hired real-estate broker Trout Daniel & Associates to scout locations in Maryland.

"They're wanting [prime] locations with a traffic light--where the people are in the mornings and afternoons," Trout Daniel principal William P. Ferrell told the newspaper, referring to busy intersections.

While suburban locations are ideal to lure drivers off the road for a pit stop, Ferrell said 7-Eleven also is interested in Baltimore City expansion. The chain in recent years has opened in Baltimore neighborhoods with high foot traffic, including locations at Mount Vernon Place and Market Place, said the report.

"They're looking in the city as well and trying to identify sites where they can take a portion of a building," Ferrell said.

Trout Daniel's work marks a new push toward expansion for 7-Eleven, Ferrell added. "They had a pipeline already going," Ferrell said. "We're just trying to find new [sites] they hadn't committed to."

In late 2009, 7-Eleven announced that it had hired brokerage firm KLNB Retail to oversee an "aggressive" expansion program that targeted the opening of approximately 50 stores annually in the greater Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia markets (see Related Content below).

Timonium, Md.-based Trout Daniel & Associates is a full-service commercial real-estate company serving businesses throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. The firm takes a highly customizable approach to providing a full range of commercial real-estate services, including brokerage, development, consulting and management services to the retail, office, industrial, multi-family and investment market segments.

Dallas-based 7-Eleven Inc. operates, franchises or licenses more than 9,100 7-Eleven stores in North America. Globally, there are some 45,200 7-Eleven stores in 16 countries. During 2010, 7-Eleven stores worldwide generated total sales of more than $62.7 billion.
