CSP Honored With Local, National Awards

ASBPE recognizes CSP for cover, research, more; first time magazine awarded on dual levels

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- For the first time, the editors and writers of CSP magazine and CSPnet.com have been recognized on both the regional and national levels in three categories of the ASBPE awards. They also were recognized in three other regional categories.

Later this summer, ASBPE, the American Society of Business Press Editors, will present CSP with gold, silver or bronze awards at national and regional ceremonies in the categories of original research, front cover photo and feature article, general interest.

Senior editor/special projects coordinator Samantha Oller has again been nominated for her analysis of CSP’s proprietary research study, the Outlook Survey. Last year, she won a silver regional award for the 2013 survey, and she won a bronze national award for her story on the 2012 survey.

In the category of front cover photo, creative director Bruce Ramsay and lead designer Nico Heins have been recognized for CSP’s November 2014 cover image, a striking photo of Speedway’s Tony Kenney. This is the first time CSP has been awarded in this category.

In another first, CSPnet.com has been recognized for The Convenience Top 101 microsite, which for the past two years has provided the industry with a comprehensive list and analysis of the top 101 convenience-store chains in the industry.

“The Convenience Top 101 project was a massive undertaking for our entire staff,” said news director Steve Holtz, who led the project. “It’s great to be recognized for creating a quality product and even better to report that the microsite has consistently driven web traffic. It’s a winner on so many levels.”

In feature article, general interest, Oller and freelance writer Jeremy Seth Davis have been nominated for their October 2014 CSP cover story, “Wage Rage,” an in-depth examination of the challenges and opportunities convenience-store retailers face in the ongoing debate about local and federal minimum wages.

Senior editor/content development coordinator Angel Abcede again has been nominated for his profile of CSP’s Retail Leader of the Year. His December 2014 profile of Sam L. Susser has been nominated for a regional award in the category of individual profile (long).

Abcede last took the silver regional award in the individual-profile category for his story on late Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes president John MacDougall, CSP’s 2013 Retail Leader of the Year. In 2013, he won a regional gold award for his 2012 profile of CSP’s previous Retail Leader of the Year, Kwik Trip’s Don Zietlow.

Oller again has been recognized, along with director of editorial production Jennifer Bulat and lead designer Nico Heins, in the category of special supplement for the2014Category Management Handbook (CMH). This in-depth special issue of CSP magazine, which is nominated for a regional award, also has been recognized numerous times over the past 11 years for excellence in information graphics.

“What is especially rewarding about this year’s incredible recognition is that we captured awards in all the areas that matter most to our readers: original research, in-depth reporting, retailer profiles, compelling design and a digital platform that enriches our industry with both the best daily news coverage in the business and valuable information on the largest 101 chains in the channel,” said vice president and group editor Mitch Morrison. “This is a great win for a gifted editorial and design team. And it’s a great win for our vibrant industry.”
