Executive Changes, Brand Changes

West succeeds retiring Scarpelli; ALON succeeds retiring FINA

DALLAS -- As a major rebranding effort commences, Mike Scarpelli, vice president of retail marketing for convenience retailer Alon Brands Inc., has elected to retire effective February 7.

As reported in a Morgan Keegan/CSP Daily News Flash yesterday, John West has taken the role of vice president of marketing, also effective February 7.

According to an announcement to vendors obtained by CSP Daily News, the company said Scarpelli "has been an instrumental member of the Alon Brands team, and during his tenure brought a significant number of improvements to our marketing program. Most recently Mike led the charge in our grocery supply conversion to Core-Mark. We wish Mike the best in his retirement."

Concerning West, it added, "John brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team and will ensure this transition will be seamless. John has led our efforts in product management and vendor relationships for many years and we look forward to supporting John in his new position."

Scarpelli is a 29-year veteran of the convenience store industry and has been vice president of retail marketing for Alon since November 2003. He was responsible for the entire merchandising department but dealt directly with cigarette, fountain, gift cards and financial services.

He was director of marketing for EZ Serve from 1998 to 2002, and was in store operations and distribution for Southland Corp. from 1980 to 1992.

Scarpelli regularly attends NACS and McLane tradeshows, and CSP events including CRU and the Outlook Leadership conference.

This month, Alon Brands will begin removing the FINA name at its branded locations in eight states, as well as its 7-Eleven stores. In its place, the ALON brand will emerge, retaining the red-white-and-blue graphic imagery, but now more closely tied to its supply roots with its parent, Alon Israel Oil Co. Ltd.
