Finding Their Waycross

Flash Foods' first complete travel center showcases Georgia chain's success

WAYCROSS, Ga. -- In many Georgia towns, the Flash Foods convenience store sign is the tallest structure around. While that may not be the case for its new travel center in Waycross, the endeavor certainly has been a tall order--and a huge success--for the chain.

Opened in the fall of 2010, "this the first complete travel center built by Flash Foods," Jenny Bullard, CIO for Flash Foods, Waycross, Ga., told CSP Daily News. "And it has the latest Flash Foods new-store prototype."

Much of the success is location, sitting where two well-traveled highways intersect and amid three area colleges and schools.

Though the chain declined to release specific sales and volume numbers, here are a few stats:

  • 10 acres.
  • 10,961 square feet inside including a McDonalds.
  • 7,350 square-foot c-store.
  • The store is divided into two areas, one that caters to truckers--WiFi available in-store and on the trucker lot--branded foods (McDonalds) and a sandwich center offered within the store.
  • Spacious lounge, with TV and gaming machines.
  • Five state-of-art showers with motion lights and built-in shower soap and shampoo dispensers.
  • Services include higher cash-advancements than other truckstops.
  • Designated "DEF" bay.
  • Large selection of trucker merchandise.
  • Large trucker parking lot, accommodating up to 40 trucks with easy access in and out.
  • Eight lanes and bays for diesel fueling, with pay-at-the-pump for most accepted, trucker-payment cards.
  • "CAT" scales on site (the only scales between I-75 Tifton, Ga., and I-95 Brunswick, Ga.).
  • Acceptance of most trucker payment cards.
  • Motion lights throughout the lounge and hall bathrooms.
  • Free shower with 50-gallon purchase.
  • *Overall, a well-lit, secure area.
  • Separate RV fueling island.
  • Onsite propane.
  • 20 fueling positions on the consumer side (unleaded, plus, premium, E85 and off-road diesel).
  • A variety of Stuckey's food, novelties and souvenirs.
  • Large beverage-coffee-fountain center with grilling stations and Krispy Kreme products.
  • In-store entertainment center offering wide selection of CDs and DVDs.

Flash Foods officials took its time in developing this project, Bullard said, letting the property sit undeveloped for a while before deciding to build a travel center. But current sales have surpassed expectations for the center and the McDonald's, boding well for similar developments in the future.
