Greenergy launches new Breakaway retail offer with community component

LEAMINGTON, Ontario -- Fuel supplier Greenergy has introduced Breakaway, a new fuel and convenience offer for independent fuel retailers in Canada. Breakaway combines a hockey-themed gas station design, Top-Tier standard fuel products and an extensive c-store offer supported by Breakaway to Play, a community investment program that helps to reduce the financial barriers to entry that prevent some families from getting involved in hockey.

The design features a Breakaway’s hockey-themed forecourt with signage resembling a hockey stick and puck. The logo incorporates the puck. The theme carries over into the backcourt with a 1,700-square-foot c-store that carries a range of fresh options and grab-and-go items. Its amenities include an ATM, coffee and restroom. Additional features include a car wash, propane and a 24-hour cardlock.

“Our research shows Canadian fuel retailers and consumers want more choice and more competition,” said Mike Healey, CEO of Greenergy Fuels Canada, Saint John, New Brunswick. “Breakaway is designed to drive site traffic and growth, and allows dealers to benefit from Greenergy’s low-cost and reliable fuel supply.”

Gateway Newstands, a small-format convenience retailer with locations in Canada and the United States, provides Breakaway’s convenience offering. “We offer Breakaway’s franchised retailers a competitive edge, bringing over 30 years of marketing expertise, profit-building group buying power, a merchandising rebate program and established top-brand suppliers,” said Steve Tennant, COO of Woodbridge, Ontario-based Gateway Newstands.

London-based Greenergy will test the Breakaway brand in select markets in Ontario over the next 12 months, and the first Breakaway site is planned for fall 2018 in Leamington, Ontario, on the site of Johnny’s Gas Bar.

“We’ve been considering rebranding Johnny’s Gas Bar for some time, but it was only when we saw Breakaway that we decided to go ahead,” said Saide Eid, owner and operator of Johnny’s Gas Bar. “It’s an exciting offering that will improve our customers’ experience.”

Gateway Newstands is a 650-store international chain of newsstand/convenience stores in high-traffic transit, shopping centers, office towers and strategically located neighborhoods. It has locations in eight Canadian provinces, primarily in Ontario; it is the exclusive newsstand retailer for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC); and it has more than 100 U.S. locations with concentration in New York and Chicago, including 16 locations in the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).
